Pilot Light Keeps Going Out
Gas Safe Reg. 980201• Same-day across Bradford, Leeds & Yorkshire
On older boilers with a permanent pilot light, the flame going out is a frustratingly common problem — especially in windy weather or as the boiler ages. If you're relighting it daily or it won't stay lit at all, the thermocouple, gas valve or pilot assembly needs attention. We repair pilot-light faults across Bradford and Leeds quickly and safely.
Most likely causes
- 1Faulty or worn thermocouple (most common — safety device shuts gas off)
- 2Pilot jet partially blocked with carbon or debris
- 3Gas valve not holding consistent pilot pressure
- 4Strong draught blowing the flame out
- 5Flue or chimney downdraft pushing air back into the pilot
- 6Condensation dripping onto the pilot assembly
What you can safely check first
Close windows and doors near the boiler. If the pilot stays lit in calm weather but goes out on windy days, a downdraft or flue issue is likely.
A healthy pilot is a strong blue flame. A weak yellow or orange flame means the jet is partially blocked or there's an air/gas mixture problem.
If it goes out more than once a day, something is wrong. Repeated relighting wastes gas and could mask a more serious fault. Book an engineer.
- Smell of gas when trying to relight the pilot
- Pilot flame is yellow or lazy — possible incomplete combustion / CO risk
- Boiler is very old and parts are obsolete — replacement may be more cost-effective
