Leaking Boiler
Gas Safe Reg. 980201• Same-day across Bradford, Leeds & Yorkshire
A leaking boiler is never "normal" and shouldn't be left. The most common leaks come from the pressure relief valve, the auto air vent, the heat exchanger or a corroded copper joint inside the case. Some are minor; some can write off the boiler. Either way — turn off the boiler and call us.
Most likely causes
- 1Pressure relief valve passing (water from outside discharge pipe)
- 2Auto air vent O-ring failed (drip from top of boiler)
- 3Heat exchanger leak — usually a write-off on older boilers
- 4Corroded copper pipework inside the case
- 5Failed pump head gasket
- 6Loose or failed expansion vessel pipework
What you can safely check first
Switch the boiler off at the fused spur and turn off the gas valve underneath if you can do so safely. This prevents further damage to electrics.
Is it dripping from the bottom of the case, the outside wall pipe, or running down a radiator pipe? A photo from above + below helps us bring the right parts.
A bowl or towel under the leak buys time. Don't seal anything yourself — water finds another way out and can damage ceilings.
- Water is dripping into the boiler casing — risk of electrical fault
- Leak running down a wall, into a ceiling, or near a fuse board
- Boiler is more than 12 years old and the leak is from the heat exchanger
