Noisy Boiler
Gas Safe Reg. 980201• Same-day across Bradford, Leeds & Yorkshire
A boiler should run almost silently. If you're hearing banging, whistling, gurgling or a kettle-like rumble, it's a sign that something is wrong — and leaving it can lead to expensive damage. We diagnose and fix noisy boilers across Bradford, Leeds and West Yorkshire every week, usually in a single visit.
Most likely causes
- 1Limescale / sludge on the heat exchanger (kettling — most common)
- 2Low system pressure causing pump to cavitate
- 3Pump failing or running too fast / too slow
- 4Air trapped in the system (gurgling noises)
- 5Loose pipework or brackets vibrating against walls
- 6Faulty fan bearing (high-pitched whine)
- 7Debris in the burner causing ignition bangs
What you can safely check first
Low pressure (below 0.5 bar) makes the pump work harder and can cause gurgling or hammering. Top up to 1.0–1.5 bar if needed.
Gurgling often means air in the system. Bleed every radiator, starting from the lowest, then top the boiler pressure back up.
Kettling = rumble like a boiling kettle (limescale). Banging = ignition or pipework loose. Whining = pump or fan bearing. This helps us bring the right parts.
- Loud banging or vibrating that shakes pipework — risk of joint failure or leak
- Noise is getting louder week by week
- Smell of burning or hot metal with the noise
